CÆLO started with a feeling before it started with a product.
I wanted to create pieces that make the everyday feel softer. Beautiful enough to leave out, considered enough to become part of a ritual, and functional enough that you notice the difference when you use them.
The idea was simple. Getting there was not.
It started with touch
Before thinking about packaging, colours or collections, I focused on the experience.
How should the silk feel against your skin?
How should it fall across a pillow?
How should it feel at the end of a long day?
Would I genuinely want to sleep on it every night?
That became the foundation of CÆLO: intelligent softness. Softness with purpose.
Then I started sampling
Finding the right silk took time.
I tested many samples, comparing them side by side and going back and forth on details that can look almost identical on paper but feel completely different in your hands.
Some were too light. Some felt beautiful initially but didn't have the substance I wanted. Others had the right weight but not the softness, drape or finish.
I kept refining
I compared the density and hand-feel of the silk, how it reflected light, how fluid it felt, how the stitching looked and how the finished product behaved once it was actually used.
Because a specification can tell you a lot.
But it can't tell you everything.
Then I lived with it
For me, a sample isn't approved when it looks good on a table.
I need to use it.
I put the pillowcases on real pillows. I slept on them. Washed them. Looked at them in daylight. Felt the silk again after use and paid attention to the small things that only become obvious once a product enters everyday life.
Then I went back and adjusted again.
The dimensions.
The construction.
The seams.
The closure.
The way the fabric sits around the pillow.
Our pillowcases use a hidden zipper, for example. It's a small detail, but it keeps the pillow neatly contained without interrupting the clean shape of the piece.
Those details matter to me because they are often what separates something that simply looks beautiful from something that has actually been considered.
Working with expertise
CÆLO pieces are made with specialist production partners with over 12 years experience working with silk and its construction.
That expertise matters.
My role is to define what the product should feel like, question the details, compare possibilities, test the result and continue refining until the physical product matches the experience I had in mind.
My design background probably makes me particularly sensitive to this process. I notice small points of friction and tend to keep asking the same question:
Can this be better?
The experience doesn't stop at the product
I think about what happens around the product too.
Opening the box.
Touching the tissue.
Seeing the silk for the first time.
Putting a fresh pillowcase on before bed.
The visual world of CÆLO is deliberately restrained. Soft neutrals, tactile materials and very little noise.
Luxury, to me, isn't about adding more.
Often, it's about caring more about fewer things.
And the process continues
I don't consider a product finished simply because it has launched.
I want to see how it behaves after weeks and months of use. What people notice. What they instinctively love. What could still be improved.
CÆLO is young, and I see that closeness to the product as an advantage.
I can still obsess over a seam. Test how something ages. Reconsider a colour. Listen carefully when someone touches the silk for the first time.
I would rather create fewer pieces and spend more time getting them right.
Because CÆLO began with a feeling.
And the process is about continuing to refine the product until it gives you that feeling too.
